Unless something goes wrong, and a soul gets lost and destroyed in the process, which happens to our main character in the beginning of this novel. They are spiritually guiding souls to their goddess in joyous and loving manner, making their society more peaceful and happy. Or, if you are first introduced to one of the Gatherers in one of their POV chapters, you would learn that they are caregivers, who can deliver a dying soul to heaven by entering their dreams and creating happiness and peace for them as they are leaving the mortal world. They need this substance to survive and have created a whole religion around it. The Gatherers could be interpreted as drug-addicts who have created a religion to support their harvesting of dreamblood from dying people. Usually the following chapter would be from a different character's POV who would have different or opposite values, and this really created a nuanced look at the world. ![]() There were many aspects that I really enjoyed: the magic system, the worldbuilding, the different viewpoints being explored, especially where the point-of-view made the reader more sympathetic to the character's values. ![]()
